Morning by the stream at the edge of the Whispering Woods. Amie crouched at the bank with a curled leaf full of berries, looking up. Howey sitting on a big mossy log, staring at the water, not looking back.

Every morning, Amie picks berries by the stream. Every morning, she asks Howey questions.

Howey sits on the big log. He always has an answer.

"Why is the stream in a hurry?"

"Somewhere to be."

"Where do the bubbles go?"

"Up."

"Where do they go after up?"

"Away."

Amie liked that one best.

But this morning, Howey didn't say "up". He didn't say "away". He didn't even say good morning.
