A LITTLE STORY OF BELONGING

The Wonky Kite

A bright, breezy morning on Crystal Cove Beach, kites dotted across the sky. In the foreground Howey holds a big blue kite with a tail of clicking shells, half hidden behind his back. Keen a little way off, satchel over his shoulder, looking up at the other kites.
PAGE 1 OF 14Somebody’s coming…

Kite Day on Crystal Cove Beach. Kites went up. Sunny's. Amie's. Misty's. Howey had untangled Sunny's string, held Amie's tail and run Misty's up first.

Keen had never had a kite. He'd come by boat, with a satchel and a map, and no kite at all.

Howey knew this. Howey had been busy for three days.

Blue, like the sea on a still day. A tail of shells that clicked.
