A LITTLE STORY OF BELONGING

The Longest Night Before the Fair

Dusk over Crystal Cove Beach. Sunny at her doorway by the rock pools, looking out at the fair field beyond: bunting strung between poles, a long table with a honey pot under a lid, a row of crabs with painted numbers on their shells. First stars.
PAGE 1 OF 14Somebody’s coming…

Tomorrow was the Cove Fair.

Sunny had helped build it all day. She'd hung the bunting. She'd carried the honey table, one end of it. She'd painted a number on every crab for the crab race, and the crabs had let her, mostly.

Now it was dark. The fair field waited beyond the rock pools, quiet as a held breath.

All Sunny had to do was sleep.

That was all.
