A LITTLE STORY OF BELONGING

Keen and the Wave in His Dream

Night at the end of the pier. Keen's small boat-house, lamplit, the boat tied below. Keen in a hammock, blanket pegged to the rope, a row of flat white shells along the windowsill. Moonlit sea under the boards. Far out, a dolphin's fin and a trail of little clicks drawn as dots.
PAGE 1 OF 14Somebody’s coming…

Keen's place is at the end of the pier, where his boat is tied.

At night the sea comes up under the boards and says hush, hush. Far out, Squeaky clicks goodnight. Keen clicks back.

His blanket is pegged to the hammock rope with a wonky peg. His flat shells sit along the sill.

"Night," said Keen, to all of it.

Most nights, that was that.
